In order to ensure that learning is continued, irrespective of school closure and self-isolation, Garton on the Wolds CE Primary School has developed the following plan. This plan offers remote learning opportunities whilst also acknowledging that some households have limited access to devices and would require hard-copies of work and resources.

This plan will be applied in the following instances:

1. An individual is self-isolating because they are awaiting a test result or they/member of their household has received a positive test.
2. A group of children are self-isolating because of a case of coronavirus in their class bubble.
3. A whole class bubble or cohort is self-isolating because of an outbreak of coronavirus.
4. During any national school closure.The plan complies with the expectations and principles outlined in the DFE documents - Guidance for Full Opening of Schools and Restricting Attendance During the National Lockdown.

 

As a school, we will endeavour to teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school, wherever possible and appropriate. However, adaptations will need to be made for some subjects, for example Art, PE, Design and Technology and Science. Where required lessons will be knowledge based and practical elements will be completed when the children are in school.

 

Our approach to remote learning during a whole class bubble having to work at home or national school closure.

 

If a class bubble has to work from home or there is a school closure then, in line with Government expectations, children will be set on average 3 hours (KS1) and a minimum 4 hours (KS2) of work to complete each day. This will be through our online learning journal, Seesaw, and through use of online software that the school subscribes to. 

 

On the first day of a bubble/school closure, initial maths and literacy activities will be uploaded to Seesaw for children to complete that day. From the second day of a bubble/school closure, daily timetables will be uploaded by class teachers along with pre-recorded videos for each lesson throughout the day.

 

Within all plans, teachers will set appropriate work in-line with our current curriculum, primarily supplemented by a range of resources provided by Oak National Academy, White Rose Maths and Read Write Inc. Online software subscriptions the school pay into will also be used to support learning i.e. Mathletics and TTRockstars.

 

We have worked with other schools within our local area to ensure we are offering similar levels of provision.

 

SeeSaw

 

See Saw, a secure online learning journal, will be the main way that teachers interact with a class who are self-isolating or with pupils during any school closure.

 

This platform allows staff to:

• Set work for the children through the uploading of video clips, photos, PDFs, links or notes.
• Provide instant feedback on work through annotations, voice recording or written comments.
• Carry out ongoing assessment of the progress children are making in key subject areas.
• Send whole class/individual announcements to the class or to parents.
• Keep a record of all children's work in one secure online journal.

This platform allows children to:

• Open tasks, set by their class teacher, in the SeeSaw app that can be downloaded on any mobile tablet device.  The work can also be accessed through the SeeSaw website.
• Respond to the feedback their teacher has given them.
• Allow them to upload their work in written, photo or video form.

This platform allows parents to:

 

• Keep up to date with the work their child has been set.
• View their child's online work journal where work is uploaded.
• Receive announcements from their child's class teacher.
• Request advice/guidance from class teachers in terms of remote learning through the messaging function.

When a whole class/bubble is isolating or during a school closure, then our aim is for the class teacher to be in contact with the whole of the class at different points in the day using the SeeSaw app. This will be to:

 

1. Welcome children to the day of remote education through a pre-recorded video.
2. Assign work. Teachers will provided a pre-recorded introduction to each task.
3. Provide motivation to children.
4. To praise children for their hard work throughout the day
5. To read their class a pre-recorded story at the end of each day.

Oak National Academy

 

Oak Academy has been selected to support remote learning for a number of reasons.  The Oak Academy lessons are in-line with our teaching ethos- they encourage the use of retrieval practice, explicit teaching with high quality modelling, and the use of deliberate practice.  The online lessons are free to all and offer a recorded taught session so that the children can access physical teaching from a teacher and then access the work realating to that lesson within the same website.  There are also hundreds of lessons specifically aimed at children with SEND needs and requiring additional support.

Any lessons set from the Oak Academy will be assigned through the SeeSaw app.

 

White Rose Maths

 

White Rose Maths resources will be used as they are matched to our current maths curriculum model.  Children are very used to seeing theses resources.

 

Mathletics

 

Mathletics will be utilised to support the acusition and retention of basic core maths skills.

 

TTRockstars

 

TTRockstars will be utilised to support the development of times table knowledge.

 

MS Teams

 

Microsoft Teams will be used once a week so children in KS1 and KS2 can 'drop-in' to take part in a live interactive tasks where they can see their class teacher and fellow class members.  Children will also take part in a short online activity.  MS Teams will only be used when necessary and in the instance of a whole bubble closing/school closure.  The primary way of providing remote learning will be through the SeeSaw app.

 

Pupil Engagement

 

In the event of any isolation and loss of learning caused by Coronavirus, it is important that children engage with the remote education provided so that they do not fall behind with their learning, however we do acknowledge that each family home circumstance is unique and there may be factors that affect engagement with remote learning.  These may include parents working from home or limited access to technology amongst other factors.  Communication is essential and we would ask that if there are any circumstances that mean a child cannot engage at least partically with the remote learning that their parent speaks to the class teacher.  If children themselves are too ill to attend then they should not be expected to enagage in remote learning.

 

Pupil engagement with the remote learning posted on SeeSaw will be monitored regularly by class teachers.  We would encourage parents to support daily routines and, where possible, follow the daily timetables posted by class teachers.  Where there are concerns about engagement, parents will be contacted by the class teachers to discuss barriers to accessing the learning and to provide support where required.

 

Teachers, where able to do so, will be in contact weekly with all parents either by phone or through SeeSaw, to discuss remote learning and to provide support when required.

 

In preperation for remote learning, parents and children will receive logins and passwords for the following platforms:

 

• SeeSaw (Unique codes will be provided for each child. Parents access the SeeSaw Family app through an e-mail invite)
• Mathletics
• TTRockstars
• Parents must ensure up to date e-mails have been provided so links to MS Teams meetings can be sent out if/when required.

Feedback and Assessment 

The work produced by children and uploaded to the Seesaw app will be read by their class teacher, or another adult in school, and electronic written feedback will be provided.  Feedback will be given daily and will involve positive praise for effort and, where appropriate, constructive comments on how to further improve. If an individual child is isolating, then feedback may not be immediate due to the teacher teaching the rest of the class in school. During a whole school/bubble closure, teachers will aim to feedback on work when it is uploaded to Seesaw. 

Teachers will use work produced by children as part of their ongoing teacher assessment. Gaps in learning will also be identified and will either be acted upon as part of work set for remote learning or will be focused on when the child returns to school. Other methods that teachers may use to assess children’s knowledge and understanding include online quizzes, short tests (i.e. spelling tests) and verbal discussions during online Microsoft Team meetings. 

Remote Learning when an individual child has to self-isolate.

 

If a child within a class has to self-isolate, due to them, a member of their houshold or being contacted by Track and Trace, then daily work will be set through the SeeSaw app. In many cases this will link with online lessons from the Oak National Academy and resources from White Rose Maths and, where possible, children will follow similar work to what us being set in class.

 

Work will be uploaded to the SeeSaw app, for any children having to self-isolate, on the day following notification of the need to self-isolate.

 

Work completed should be sent back to class teachers via the SeeSaw app.  Class teachers will be continuing to teach the rest of the class in school, so will not be on hand to provide instant feedback to any work submitted.

 

If you do not have access to a laptop/mobile device/ internet connection, then please contact the School Office and we will provide support.  Where required, school will provide paper resources for remote learning.

 

Parents/carers who do not have devices or online access at home.

 

We recognise that not all families have access to devices i.e. laptops/tablets or have online access at home.  We take the following approaches to support those pupils access remote education.

 

• We have a limited number of laptops that we would be able to loan out to parents who have no available devices at home, but do have internet access.  Please contact the school office (garton@eastriding.gov.uk or telephone 01377 253110) for further details.
• Where required, when families do not have device or online access, we will provide printed materials for pupils to complete at home.
• Work completed by the child can be handed in when the next printed pack has been recieved.  This will then be given to class teachers who will mark it.

Support for SEND Pupils.

 

Children on the Special Educational Needs reegister will be supported in a number of ways.

 

• In any school closure, children with an EHCP, will be offered a place in the keyworker/vunerable provision groups.
• Activities, where required, will be differentiated and sent out through the SeeSaw app.
• When needed, paper packs of remote learning will be sent home for children on the SEND register to complete.
• There will be ongoing communication between home and school.
